Summertime is coming soon....

Hey. Have you ever just sat down and thought how crazy life gets, and how crazy fast it seems to go. It’s hard to believe my sophomore year is almost over. 2 weeks left to be precise. Life can change so quickly, so suddenly that you can miss some of the most amazing things in life. That’s always been one of my biggest problems that I’m so busy or I’m so stretched for time that I can’t just sit and see the beauty. Well, I was really determined to change that this past year and in a way I have become successful. I’ve learned that stress is a positive thing if you can use it for the better. By that I mean, let the stress make you study harder when you are studying but don’t forget to have a good time when you take breaks. Its taken me years to actually get to this point, and I know I still have room to grow, but man…when you just sit back and look at the world around you it can be amazing to see what God has given us.

Ok..try this… at a recent bible study everyone went outside and sat down by the lake just looking out into the wilderness. They gave us a challenge… for the next week everyday to go somewhere different and just sit in silence looking, listening and praying. I thought it would be fun just to see if I could do it, then realized how much noise we have in our world. No wonder at times we can’t hear God talking to us… we don’t take the time to listen.

That is something that has been on my heart lately as things are buzzing here around campus. School is almost out for the summer, the weather is beautiful and classes are getting more stressful. Now when they tell you classes get harder in college…its partially true… they are hard, but you know more information so it’s a different kind of hard. Don’t let it worry you though…you can do it.

As for my life, things are amazing. I just found out that my baby dog..not so baby anymore…but she is pregnant and will be having puppies on the 12th of May. I’ll be sure to put pictures up for everyone to see. I AM SOO EXCITED. My family keeps telling me stories daily how she is so cuddly and her belly is getting so big that she can’t jump up on the bed any longer.

Our Final Golf South Conference Championship is coming up this weekend, so we are preparing for that. We will leave on Saturday early in the morning play a practice round that day. Then have 2 days of competition following that. Be sure to keep us in your prayers.

My clubs function is coming up very soon. This year we are having a 40’s and 50’s Hollywood Formal. I had the honor of planning that this year so I’m very excited to see how everything works out. It’s a tradition here at Harding that the beaux and Queens for the club help to plan the entertainment. That is always a highlight or any function.

As for right now my life is really centered on my classes though. I will also be staying for Intersession this year to take a class called BioChemistry. I will work day and night for 2 weeks and be done with the class. It’s pretty cool how it works. Well…I have a major test tomorrow so I should probably be studying, but thanks for the Blog site I got a chance to take a break, or just procrastinate…one of the two..haha

Venezuela Here I Come

Hey guys. Wow… it’s been forever since I wrote last. My life has been amazing and crazy lately. Thankfully God has helped me make it through. Well the last I told you about was the golf tournament that I was leaving for. Ok..so here’s the dish. Harding came in second place. And I tied for 1st on Harding’s team. I was really excited. We had a wonderful time as a team again..i really had missed the girls and was glad to be back with them.

****

After I came back to school I was playing the game of catch up. The great thing is that my teachers are amazing. They took time out of their own day to help me, and make sure I learned all the information I had missed. Being a Science major can be tough, especially when you miss class frequently. But thanks to my teachers, it’s like I almost never missed. So I basically worked myself to the bone, which was good for school, yet bad for my body. I ended up getting a little sick, but I’m doing great now.

Here are some fun social parts of my weeks:

- The Chi Sigma Apha, a club on campus, Basketball game. The guys were awesome and afterwards some of the fans got to play with them, in a girls vs. boys basketball game. Not to mention in BAREfeet…a very scary thing in the gym. It was so much fun, and helped to calm my stress a lot.

- Open House for my dorm. We made cookies and had our good friends come over for some movies and chatting. I love when the guys get to come in our dorms. It is about once a month for 2 hours. This week we had it on a Tuesday, but it’s normally on Sunday. The doors stay open and feet stay on the ground but it’s a great time to chill and show friends your room’s personality.

- Saturday Night was the LAST home basketball game of the season…GO HU. I love going to the games and cheering with everyone. The fans at Harding are SOOO supportive. That is always a highlight for me, and an adrenaline boost for the weekend. At Harding we have VERY original cheers and everyone gets into the game. Many people paint their faces, get totally dressed up and even loose their voices cheering so loudly. I would 150% encourage you to come and see what these basketball games are all about. You won’t be disappointed.

- Function time…woohoo. Last Friday night I was invited to a “Caddy Shack” Function. It was a BLAST. The men created individual holes all centered on sports. Some were basketball, curling, basketball, football, you name it and we had it. Then in teams of 4 we played the holes together, and yes kept score. Some of the holes were IMPOSSIBLE but so much fun. I decided to get all dressed up in argyle print socks, capri’s, collard shirt and of course flip-flops. Haha..ok the flip-flops didn’t go but they were an interesting conversation piece. That night couldn’t have been better.

As for me now, I am getting ready to leave the United States and head for South America. I am going Maracaibo, Venezuela on a Spring Break Campaign, and I am pumped. Although I have to leave Friday morning at 3:30 from Harding it will be worth it. In Venezuela we are hosting a Conference for the adults and VBS for the children. Everything of course will be in Spanish, great thing I spent last semester in Chile. We have broken into 3 groups and each group will lead one night of the VBS. My team has chosen to teach about David and Goliath. During the other time we are there, the group will be passing out flyers, taking pictures for the newspaper, interviews on TV and the radio and even some home bible studies with the people. We will also be visiting an Orphanage while we are there. The weather is supposed to be wonderful and the temperatures are going to be very high since it is summer down there. Luckily we get to go to the beach. Woohoo…that will be a lot of fun as well. I know this experience is going to be so humbling for me; I can’t wait to see what God has in store for me during this experience.

I hope everyone has a wonderful week and I can’t wait to tell you of my adventures In Venezuela. Be sure to keep all the Spring Break Mission Campaigns in your prayers. God Bless.

Happy Valentine's Day

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY EVERYONE.

I hope all of you had a WONDERFUL Valentine’s Day. Here at Harding yesterday was crazy. Everyone was getting Valentine’s and the mailboxes were packed. It’s probably the busiest day here on campus. I got lots of wonderful and sweet valentine’s and even got to send my own handmade cards to my friends. I made little A of hearts playing cards that said “you’re a real ace” and Elephants to remind them that elephants never forget so that elephant wont ever let them forget how much I love them. Just some fun corny stuff like that. It did end up being a wonderful day with bible study that night at a little cabin just outside of town. We call it, the log cabin bible study…original isn’t it. Then after bible study, we went to midnight oil for some coffee and games. Time with my friends here is the best and one of my very favorite things about coming here every year for school.
Other than Valentine’s Day life has been wonderful. Classes are going well but I’m beginning to feel the stress from the academics. They are well under way and golf has begun. I have my first tournament this Sunday, Monday and Tuesday in Fort Smith, Arkansas. I only hope its not too cold or rainy over there. I haven’t been able to practice too much though because of all the cold weather over here. Not to mention I have been out of the country for the past few months so I’m a little worried on how everything will go. As for my mission trip to Venezuela this spring break, that is all looking great. We are working really hard to try and raise the money to go down there, and also working on what we are going to teach the children when we get there. I am sooo excited to be able to go down there and talk to the people. I am a Spanish minor so anytime I am able to use Spanish I am very happy. We are also visiting a children’s home when we are there, which is one thing I have such a passion for, little kids. YAY…that’s pretty much how I am feeling about this mission trip. Please be sure to keep us in yours prayers. On top of all this I am also planning a function for my club this Saturday. All is looking great and I just got the preview for our function shirts and they look amazing. Well…there’s a little update of my life. As for now, it’s over and out for me, I’m heading out to the golf course to do a little practicing. Happy Valentine’s day.

In His Love,
Vanessa

A wonderful Saturday

Have you ever just taken random pictures with your friends for fun? OH man, its sooo much fun. This past Saturday morning, a little earlier than I would have liked, I was able to help with Bison Daze and a fun photo scavenger hunt called the Amazing Race. My group was called Default, funny name. We went against 5 other groups of students and one group of parents. Our pictures ranged from playing the piano in the new lobby, to taking a picture with Dr. Burks, the president of Harding. He was so helpful and even invited us into his home to take the picture. As much as I wish I could say we won, sadly the parents came victorious. But we had a wonderful time, and the pictures came out great. It was also a wonderful start to a very busy weekend.
That evening we had a black out basket ball game. A black out game means that all the fans wear black and some even paint their faces, however that is a normal thing. The games at Harding are amazing; mainly because of how much the fans support every team. I got all decked out in my Harding attire and headed for the game in high spirits. If you have never been to a Harding game you are missing out. Harding students have spirit written on their hearts, haha ok that was pretty cheesy, but I love our athletic games. That game was especially fun because the house was packed and the game was a close one. Yet in the end HARDING WON. Go Harding.
Well its been a long day and I need to get my sleep. Its going to be an early morning. I’m going to College Church with my friends and then to open house later in the afternoon. Open house is a time when girls and guys can go into each others dorm for two hours. The doors do have to be open, but it’s a great time to play ddr, watch movies and just veg. Well goodnight all and I hope your day has been as amazing as mine. Be sure to look at my next post, its going to be all about my future trip to Venezuela for a mission trip during Spring Break, and also next week I have my first golf Tournament. So be sure to watch how the lady bison golf team does at Lion.

Hey Everyone!

Hey Everyone

IT’S SNOWING OUTSIDE. It’s snowing in Arkansas. Haha…it is so much fun out there I just got back from a crazy snowball fight, with lots of slipping and sliding and people getting tackled right and left. Everyone is hoping tomorrow will be a snow day. I guess we won’t know until tomorrow though. It is so beautiful outside, but very cold…thank goodness for hot coca and warm beds.
Wow…it’s so crazy to think that another semester at Harding is well on its way. My sophomore year to be exact, and what an amazing year it’s been so far. I had the pleasure to go on one of Harding’s 7 overseas programs around the world. I spent last semester in Vina Del Mar, Chile.
I can’t even begin to explain to you how much I LOVED Chile. It was more than the adventure of a lifetime. Along with 42 other amazing students and teachers I traveled from the Andes Mountains in Peru to the Glaciers of Argentina and all throughout the Country of Chile. One of the coolest things I found out was that Chile is like an Island on the Continent of South America, surrounded on all 4 sides by natural barriers and giant landmarks. To the north is the Atacama dessert, the driest desert in the world, to the east is the majestic mountains of the Andes, to the South the frozen ice lands filled with Glaciers and to the west, the rolling waves of the Pacific Ocean. There was never a day I wasn’t blessed by the beauty of God’s creation. But the fun didn’t stop with just the view. I went skiing in the Andes, with the Canadian ski team. Riding Horses, Sand boarding, swimming, white water rafting, zip lining through the tree tops. Oh my goodness so many amazing memories. While the HULA group was in Chile our home base was in the resort town of Vina Del Mar. We lived right next to the president of Chile…and here’s a fun fact for you. HER name is Michelle Bachelet Jeria…a woman president how cool is that. Our home was the Austrian consultant, Roca Blanca positioned on the top of a giant hill overlooking the town and the ocean. I lived with 5 other girls in a beautiful 4 bedroom apartment and believe me…I wish I still lived in that apartment. Lol…. It was the most beautiful apartment I had ever seen. The HULA group had 28 women, 7 guys, 3 teachers and 6 chaperones. One of our teachers brought his family along making it feel even more like a giant family. We all got along sooo well and make so many new friends that we will have to a lifetime. Now I did have to take classes overseas. I took 16 hours and against what most people will tell you…the classes are not that easy. But it is MORE than worth it to go overseas. One of my favorite parts of Chile was just living in the town of Vina and finding our way around the city. Talking with the people and living in their culture. It was very different just for the fact that no one speaks English there. Well enough about Chile for now. I’m sure it will come up in some of my next posts. And feel free to ask me ANYTIME about the experience. I would encourage you to go overseas if you are given the opportunity no matter where you go.
Well now that you know what I have done this past semester lets get back to the present. I'm a sophomore here at Harding University and I absolutely love it. God has definitely blessed my life here. I have amazing friends, teachers, and just love to be around campus. My goal is to one day become a doctor and serve God for the rest of my life... those are just my plans, but like proverbs 19:21 says that my plans could changed based on what plans God has for me. I’m Biology major with a minor in Spanish and Medical Mission work. I was born in Canada but for the past 13 years I have lived in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho with my Dad, Mom and little Brother. I love to do almost anything. Play sports, listen to music, hang with friends, shopping, watching movies, going out for dinner and most of all I just love to smile and laugh. For me Harding has been the perfect place to grow in my faith, my studies and most of all to have fun just being who I am. I am on the golf team here at Harding and have many wonderful adventures. I have a tournament coming up here in a few weeks, so I will definitely keep you posted on how that goes. I am in the Social Club called OEGE, and am what’s called the Activities director. My job is to plan our functions. They are kind of like parties with devos and great times. Our first one is in 2 weeks, just after Valentines Day. We are having a photo scavenger hunt all around campus. It’s going to be so much fun.
Harding has been a wonderful home for me these past two years and I hope that one day you two can share in these wonderful experiences with me. Well I can just hear that homework calling my name so I better go get it done so I can go to bed at a decent hour tonight. Goodnight everyone.
